When it comes to movies on Netflix, it's very much a case of 'catch them while you can'.

Films often leave the streaming platform, giving fans with a finite amount of time to give them a watch.

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in the film.

One Jake Gyllenhaal flick is set to make its departure this week - and going by its 94 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, it's well worth seeing before it's gone.

Gyllenhaal stars in the lead role as Lou Bloom, a shady guy involved in low-level criminal activities.

One day he witnesses a car accident on the motorway, and meets a cameraman played by Bill Paxton.

Lou is stunned to learn that this cameraman makes a living capturing crashes and crimes on tape to sell to the local news.

Wanting to cash in, Lou sets up 'Video Production News', and gets himself a camera from a pawn shop.

With the help of a police scanner, Lou manages to be the first on scene by learning police codes.

He's assisted in this by a homeless man called Rick, played by Riz Ahmed.

As he rises in the 'industry', he resorts to more desperate means to keep the money rolling in.

Although the movie, called Nightcrawler, is not without its humorous moments, it's a dark thriller on the whole.

Critics have heaped praise on the film since it was released back in 2014.

One reviewer wrote: "A gritty urban comedy noir, a scathing, Network-worthy disembowelment of television newsgatherers that will leave you craving a shower."

The film is available to stream until Friday (29 March).

In this case, 'craving a shower' is a good thing.

Another critic gushed: "A mesmerizing cipher, Lou is a spiritual descendant of Robert De Niro's Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver, and of the withholding protagonists in the existential French crime films of Robert Bresson and Jean-Pierre Melville."

While someone else wrote: "A smart, engaged film powered by an altogether remarkable performance by Jake Gyllenhaal, it is melodrama grounded in a disturbing reality, an extreme scenario that is troubling because it cuts close to the bone."

Many reviews praised Nightcrawler for its dark edge, biting satire and overall entertainment value.

Gyllenhaal's performance was widely applauded, with a review in The Los Angeles Time deeming him 'remarkable'.

The Guardian's review even called it the 'best performance of his career'.

Given Gyllenhaal's long list of impressive films, that's quite an accomplishment.

Nightcrawler remains on Netflix until 29 March.
