As the countdown is on for the final episodes of season five to land on the streaming platform, viewers are devouring every cast interview and fan theory in an attempt to guess how things in Hawkins will ultimately wrap up.

With Will's extensive connection to the Upside Down revealed, fans are pretty convinced his character will play a major role in how the series wraps up and are combing over Schnapp's interviews for any clues.

So when the actor appeared to reveal an interesting clue about Vecna, fan ears pricked up.

During an interview with TV Guide, Schnapp and Millie Bobby Brown were asked for their opinion on who was the most misunderstood character in the show, to which he replied: "Lowkey Vecna."

Brown appeared to be surprised by the admission, asking her co star: "Really?"

Schnapp started to say: "Because like..."

"NO, shut up... that's it, be quiet," she said, before prompting the interviewer to continue.

When the pair were prompted to expand on the topic of Vecna and any possibility he was anything more than a straight villain, The Electric State actor refused to discuss the topic further.

"Let's just not even, because today has been a day," she added.

"We want to do so much for you but we're not smart enough to dance around these questions."

Interesting.

The moment has of course been dissected hundreds of times over by fans online for clues about the show's finale.

"Vecna is not the main villain like ppl think," wrote one person on Reddit, to which a second agreed: "It’s likely Vecna has been a puppet, ironically, for the Mindflayer the entire time. Which will likely be the reveal and what turns him to betray. It’s why he’s so scared of his memories.

"I’m going with that, but being confronted that since he was never in control he’ll fight against the Mindflayer but won’t live in the Rightside Up. Kinda an 'enemy of my enemy is my friend' type thing," added a third.

Meanwhile other fans pointed to the Stranger Things stage show for further clues about Vecna's origins, with one person adding: "They've made the stage play canon in the series. This changes EVERYTHING about Vecna/001/Henry. He's a horrible person/monster, yeah absolutely. But, it's not like he had a choice.

"That's why Noah said Vecna is a misunderstood villain."
