Real-Life 'Anna Delvey' Gives Verdict On Julia Garner's Accent

The real life 'Anna Delvey' has shared her take on Julia Garner's accent in Inventing Anna. If you're not familiar with the show, you can watch the trailer here:

The nine-episode Netflix mini-series was released on Friday (11 February) and was created by Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy, Bridgerton and Scandal).

It features 28-year-old Garner as Anna Delvey (whose real name is Anna Sorokin) who convinced New York's social elite that she was one of them, managing in turn to con them for their riches.

The show is based on an article by Jessica Pressler titled ‘How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People’, which was published in New York magazine in 2018, with the series delving into the relationship forged between the journalist and her subject.

Now the IRL Anna Sorokin has explained what she thinks specifically about Garner's accent.

Speaking to Insider, she explained: "I don't think it's off. I think she kind of falls in and out of it. Some of it she gets right - but not everything."

The accent might be a difficult one because Sorokin grew up in Russia until the age of seven. She then moved to Germany for a decade, before spending time in different cities prior to getting to New York in 2013.

Garner was very much aware of this, telling IndieWire: "This is a girl who said that she was German, and people believed it, but she actually was born in Russia, so she's not going to have a Russian accent.

"And then she probably learned English in the British way because she's European [and] they don't learn American English."

When Sorokin arrived in NY, she told people she had a €60 million (£44.3m) trust fund overseas, while convincing them to pay large amounts of money for trips they had taken together.

In 2019 she was convicted of multiple counts of attempted grand larceny, theft of services and larceny in the second degree.

She was released from prison in February last year – although was later taken back into custody after overstaying her visa and is currently incarcerated in New York's Orange County Jail.

According to Insider, Sorokin was paid $320,000 (£237,000) by Netflix for the rights to adapt her life story into a TV series.

Records reviewed by the outlet show she used $199,000 (£147,000) of the money to pay restitution to the banks, along with another $24,000 (£18,000) to settle state fines.

Inventing Anna is available to watch on Netflix now.
