Squid Game director releases deleted scene ahead of season two

Squid Game writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk has chucked fans a morsel of fresh content in the form of a deleted scene from season one

We’ve still got a while to go before we can wrap our eyeballs around Squid Game’s second season.

Earlier this year, writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed that season two will start shooting next year for a 2024 release.

But today (24 September) Dong-hyuk chucked fans a morsel of fresh content in the form of a deleted scene from season one. You can watch the clip below:

Teasing the clip, he said in a video shared on Squid Game’s official Twitter: “Hello, I’m Hwang Dong-hyuk, the director of Squid Game.

“I’d like to thank all the Netflix fans around the world again for loving Squid Game.”

Dong-hyuk continued: “Please look forward to season two, which will be filled with all-new stories.

“But in the meantime, I’ve prepared a small gift for the fans waiting for Squid Game season two. Let’s take a look now.”

The deleted scene was seemingly designed to fuel speculation about the Front Man's mysterious identity.

It shows a man – who viewers would have likely been led to suspect was the Front Man if the clip had made the cut – returning home with two goldfish and emptying them into a bowl.

The camera then cuts to outside, where a police officer can be seen observing the flat.

If reaction to the clip is anything to go by, it seems Dong-hyuk’s call to cut the scene was correct, as many people were left confused.

One person wrote: “What did I just watch? Seriously I have no idea what that was or when or what it means.”

Another added: “Huh?” while a third said: “No wonder it got deleted.”

Dong-hyuk confirmed pretty soon after Squid Game’s release last year that a second season was in the works, saying at the time: “So, there's been so much pressure, so much demand, and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice.

"But, I will say there will indeed be a second season. It's in my head right now. I'm in the planning process currently. But I do think it's too early to say when and how that's going to happen."

Just over a month later, Dong-hyuk went a step further and revealed season three talks had already kicked off.

Speaking with Korean broadcaster KBS, Dong-hyuk said: “I'm in talks with Netflix over season 2 as well as season 3. We will come to a conclusion any time soon.”

That’s a whole lotta Squid Game.
