Stranger Things Creators Regret Killing Off Character In Season 4

There's no turning back from THAT death

Stranger Things season four kicked off part one with a truly disturbing death, and while it certainly gave viewers the horror injection they’d been promised, the creators have said they regret the decision.

We’re going to assume that any fans out there have at least watched the first episode of the new installment, but just in case you haven’t we’re about to enter spoiler territory - you have been warned.

So, at the end of the episode, the troubled yet loveable cheerleader Chrissy - portrayed by Grace Van Dien - becomes the first victim of the latest big bad on the Netflix sci-fi show.

After suffering visions of the dreaded grandfather clock, she comes under the spell of Vecna, who proceeds to crush her to death in truly horrifying fashion.

However, the Duffer brothers have revealed they wish they hadn’t chosen to kill Chrissy off due to her great chemistry with Joseph Quinn's nonconformist metalhead Eddie Munson.

You see, in the events leading up to the cheerleader’s death, she seeks out Eddie’s assistance in the drug department and the pair end up having a heartwarming reunion of sorts in the woods.

The moment posed great potential for the unlikely couple, but unfortunately the scene was filmed after Chrissy's death was shot and so her fate had already been decided.

Speaking to TVLine about their regret, Matt Duffer said: “We always have those moments [of ‘What have we done?’].

“We shot the quote-unquote drug-deal scene in the woods pretty late, actually, into shooting.”

Ross Duffer added: "We had already killed Chrissy when we shot that," before Matt continued: "The scene came alive in a way that was just so beautiful. And so much of that was Joe and Grace.

“It was just one of those fortunate scenes where we were able to have two cameras rolling capturing them simultaneously.

“Joe was doing a lot of stuff kinda spontaneously, and we were getting these amazing reactions from Grace.

“It’s pretty impressive what Grace was able to do with very, very few scenes to get people to care like she did.”

Chrissy suffered a brutal death at the hands of Vecna.

Well, sadly we won’t get to find out what could’ve happened between Chrissy and Eddie - there’s no turning back from that death.

But just like Sean Astin - who portrayed Bob in season two of Stranger Things - the Duffer brothers are keen to find another way with which to work with Grace again.

Matt concluded by saying: “We’ll find something else to do with Grace, something else to do with Sean.”

You can watch the first volume of season four now, with the second volume - comprising two film-length episodes - due to be released on 1 July on Netflix.
