Netflix’s 1899 has been cancelled after just one season despite receiving rave reviews from viewers.

Showrunners Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, who also created Dark, announced on social media that the German sci-fi series had been axed.

Odar wrote: “With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed.

“We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark.

"But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned.”

The show centred around a ship full of immigrants travelling from London to New York. Things take an unexpected turn when they discover another vessel adrift on the ocean.

"It's structured again as a three-season mystery puzzle just like Dark," Friese told Entertainment Weekly.

"Obviously, this will only happen if enough people watch."

The series generated a loyal following after it was released and was even ranked at number two on Netflix’s Top 10 TV English titles just three days after its release, clocking 79.27 million hours viewed.

1899 was also commended by critics, as Collider named it one of the best series of 2022, and Movieweb ranked it the sixth-best show of the year.

Diksha Sundriyal for The Cinemaholic said the series does a ‘splendid job of spreading the clues around for the viewers'.

"The answer always seems in sight, but somehow, it goes farther away the closer you get to it," she said.

Whereas TV Fanatic's Paul Dailly praised it for nailing the tone while perfectly capturing a feeling of ‘dread’.

He added: “The characterisation is another strong point, and 1899 introduces everyone early into the premiere in a way that makes them integral to the story.”

Once news broke that the series would not be returning, fans were left shattered, especially after the final episode **spoiler alert** revealed that the entire oceanic voyage was a simulation.

One person wrote: “1899 getting cancelled after literally being at the top of Netflix’s daily charts for weeks after release and then only dropping to two because of Wednesday which they ALSO haven’t renewed yet doesn’t make any sense to me.”

Another said: “Not Netflix cancelling 1899 before I got their endgame, crying brb.”

While a third shared: “Please HBO Amazon SOMEONE please pick up 1899. I will give you my organs.”

We just hope Netflix is offering some kind of 1899 support group, especially after ending on that cliffhanger.
