WARNING: DIRTY JOHN SPOILERS LIE AHEAD

Yesterday Netflix dropped the second season of Dirty John and it's making viewers' skin crawl.

You might remember, the first season focused on the true story of trickster John Meehan and the woman he abused and manipulated, Debra Newell and this new instalment is introducing a complete new storyline.

Netflix

Season two, Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story, stars Amanda Peet and Christian Slater, and is based on the real-life case of Betty and Dan Broderick.

Fans have already tuned in to watch the new series and are shocked with what goes on.

One person tweeted: "This Dirty John Betty Broderick series is mad. Her husband gaslighted her and emotionally abused her for years, took her children away from her, got her committed, stopped her getting legal representation and everyone was surprised she killed him?! He literally drove her insane."

Another added: "Only on episode 2 of #dirtyjohn #betty and I feel so sorry for her. Murder is wrong but man her ex husband was an ass. What she went through with him and then he treated her like s**t after all that????"

If you want us to walk you through the bare bones of the story we're more then willing. Leave now if you don't want any further spoilers.

Born in 1947, Betty (maiden name Bisceglia) came from a strict Roman Catholic family and was raised with traditional values. She later met Dan Broderick, who would become her husband, while studying the University of Notre Dame in 1965.

The couple had five children together, with Betty supporting Dan during his time at law school and becoming the main breadwinner of the family.

Dan went on to scoop a role at one of San Diego's top law firms, and the family moved into a 'picket fence' fantasy home in the American suburbs and things went sour when Dan's affair with his legal assistant, Linda Kolkena (Rachel Heller) was exposed.

What followed was one of the messiest divorces in American history, dragged out over a period of five years. Once the divorce was finalised, Dan married Linda - but the saga was far from over...

Dirty John Season 2 is available now on Netflix.
