Just in case you weren't excited enough for the next SpongeBob SquarePants movie, turns out none other than international treasure Keanu Reeves is making a cameo - although not as you'd imagine.

As shown in the new trailer, released today (14 November), the Bill and Ted star turns up with his head superimposed inside tumbleweed to offer SpongeBob and Patrick some advice.

"Call me Sage," he says, "I'm made out of Sage and I am a Sage, so it works out pretty well."

Yep, looks like the film is set to be just a surreal as the series. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run is set for release in May 2020, marking the third feature film in the franchise based on the popular TV series.

Written and directed by Tim Hill, the voice cast includes Tom Kenny, Awkwafina, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence, Douglas Lawrence and Reggie Watts.

Scenes in the trailer show us a young (and ridiculously cute) SpongeBob as he meets his best pal Gary the snail at Camp Coral.

Fast forward to the present day and Gary's been snail-napped! The film will follow SpongeBob and Patrick (and Keanu Reeves) as they embark on a hilarious adventure to #SaveGary.

SpongeBob fans will be delighted to know this isn't all the franchise has up its sleeves, as Nickelodeon has also confirmed a prequel series.

A SpongeBob SquarePants spinoff series is also in the works.

The 13-part show will reportedly document the younger years of the porous protagonist and, considering the working title is Kamp Koral, will perhaps delve even further into the flashback scenes we see in the trailer.

What makes this prequel different from previous iterations of the show is that it will be completely animated using CGI, giving an altogether different aesthetic - although hopefully the psychedelic adventures of the underwater crew will be just as trippy.

And here's hoping we get to find out how he came to live in a pineapple under the sea.

Announcing the show, Nickelodeon's executive vice president for Animation Production and Development Ramsey Naito said: "SpongeBob has an incredible universe to expand upon and the green light for Kamp Koral is a testament to the strength and longevity of these characters known and loved by generations of fans around the world."

There could also potentially be another spin-off in the works too, as earlier this year Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins said they're thinking of exploring 'an original story about SpongeBob and Patrick, or a [diving suited squirrel] Sandy Cheeks stand-alone story'.

Robbins said: "That's our Marvel Universe. You have this amazing show that's run for almost twenty years."
