Spider-Man actor Tom Holland has put to bed rumours that ex-Spideys Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will be popping up in the upcoming Spider-Man 3.

Claims that the two previous Spider-Man actors will be back for the new movie have been swirling for months, but Holland has now shut down the speculation.

Speaking to Esquire, Holland said: "No, no, they will not be appearing in this film.

"Unless they have hidden the most massive piece of information from me, which I think is too big of a secret for them to keep from me.

"But as of yet, no. It'll be a continuation of the Spider-Man movies that we've been making."

Well, that's that then - or is it?

Because later in the interview, Holland admitted that the studio has kept him in the dark about certain plot lines in the past.

He said: "They do it all the time. In [Avengers: Endgame], Robert Downey Jr.'s funeral scene, for the longest time I was under the impression that it was a wedding.

"I'm 100 percent sure that they're still tricking me."

The plot thickens, eh?

Tobey Maguire played the role across three films - all directed by Sam Raimi - between 2002 and 2007, while Andrew Garfield took over as the webslinger for a reboot. This amounted to two movies, released in 2012 and 2014.

Holland, who has played Spider-Man since the character was rebooted once more in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, has previously teased fans by announcing that Spider-Man 3 is set to be the 'most ambitious standalone superhero movie' ever.

Bold claims, mate.

Speaking on the Variety Awards Circuit podcast, the 24-year-old said: "I can say that it's the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made.

"You sit down, read the script, and see what they're trying to do, and they're succeeding. It's really impressive.

"I've never seen a standalone superhero movie quite like it.

"And I'm just, you know... that lucky little s*** who happens to be Spider-Man in it.

"We got a lot more shooting to do. We started before Christmas and shot for like seven weeks. We stopped for the Christmas break, and then we're starting again. I'm just as excited as everyone else to see it, let alone be a part of it."

The flick started filming back in October, and is set to be released on 17 December this year.
