The Boys season five will be the show's final season.

This comes just before the latest episodes drop on Prime Video on Thursday (13 June).

Writer Eric Kripke confirmed the news, leaving fans pretty heartbroken as they called it 'bittersweet'.

The developer of the hit TV show explained how it's 'always' been his plan to cut it off at five seasons.

Also a writer on the show's spin-off series, Gen V, Kripke wrote on X: "#TheBoys Season 4 Premiere Week is a good time to announce: Season 5 will be the Final Season!

"Always my plan, I just had to be cagey till I got the final OK from Vought. Thrilled to bring the story to a gory, epic, moist climax. Watch Season 4 in 2 DAYS, cause the end has begun!"

Reacting to Kripke's announcement, fans admitted it's 'been a great ride' as they said the series has been 'just the right length'.

Another added: "This is so sad but totally understandable! Short and sweet."

Although one put: "I still hope the story can continue. Five seasons is not enough."

But many agreed: "For quality it makes a ton of sense, however I’ll be so sad that the show is ending."

Someone else commented: "Bittersweet announcement but I’d rather it end on a high instead of losing quality from overstaying its welcome."

As one echoed: "Had a feeling this was coming, but it's just so sad. Forever grateful for this show. What a masterpiece. Can't wait for season 4!!!"

For us UK viewers, season four of The Boys will land on Prime Video this Thursday, with the 'world on the brink'.

Kicking off the latest batch of episodes, Victoria Neuman is 'closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the muscly thumb of Homelander, who is consolidating his power'.

Meanwhile Butcher only has months to live, has lost Becca's son and is no longer The Boys' leader - at this point, the team are done with his lying.

"With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late," the synopsis adds.

Season four of The Boys begins on Prime Video this Thursday (13 June).
