It’s Been Two Years Since Chanel The African Grey Parrot Went Missing

Today marks the two-year anniversary of Chanel the African grey parrot’s grand escape from her home in Liverpool

Today marks the two-year anniversary of Chanel the African grey parrot’s grand escape from her home in Liverpool. Take a look to remind yourself of the iconic video:

Taking to the skies after escaping through her cage’s water bowl gate, Chanel’s owner Sandra Hannah went viral after posting a video of herself pacing up and down the streets outside her Netherton home in search of the bird.

Many of us will never forget Sandra repeatedly shrieking her parrot’s name into the sky as tears streamed down her face. The rest is internet history.

Sandra marked the anniversary on Instagram on Tuesday, posting a clip of herself prancing around those Netherton streets we’ve come to know so well while wearing what appears to be a wedding dress.

The passionate pet owner captioned her post: “Good morning everyone. Can’t believe it’s been two years today! Happy Tuesday, [I] hope you’re all OK and having a fabulous day.”

After being viewed by more than 40,000 people on Facebook alone, Sandra’s 2020 video led to Chanel's safe return home after the bird knocked on the window of someone living two miles away.

Speaking to MailOnline at the time, Sandra explained: “She was knocking on a window in Seaforth saying ‘hello, hello, hello’. I didn't know the person, I didn't even have her on Facebook.”

Sandra added: “The reaction of all social media, it just melted my heart. That many people got involved and they found my parrot basically. I just want to thank the whole world.”

Mischievous Chanel made another bid for freedom in July 2021, prompting Sandra to once again take to social media on a wild parrot chase.

She explained: "Hi guys, I'm so sorry I need your help again, it's not a joke.

"Chanel flew off again. Please I don't know what to do, but if anyone sees her you know what she's like.

"She just flew off. I'm so sorry, just please, if anyone sees her please contact me."

Following her second flight of fancy, Chanel did not return home for three days, but her eventual safe return bagged Sandra a spot on This Morning, where she declared to the nation: “My bedroom door came bursting open, they turned the lights on and Chanel was in my daughter’s arms.”

Describing their reunion, Sandra added: “She flew to me and I snuggled her.”

Chanel last starred on Sandra’s Instagram in December, when she was seen telling one of Amazon’s Alexa devices to ‘shut up’.
