Heartstopper viewers are already clambering for a second season on Netflix. You can check out the trailer for the show below:

The series, based on a graphic novel by Alice Oseman, has earned widespread critical acclaim, with some describing it as the most important British show since last year's extraordinary It's a Sin.

The streaming platform's synopsis reads: "When gentle Charlie (Joe Locke) and rugby-loving Nick (Kit Connor) meet at secondary school, they quickly discover that their unlikely friendship is blossoming into an unexpected romance.

"Charlie, Nick, and their circle of friends must navigate the ever-relatable journey of self discovery and acceptance, supporting each other as they learn to find their most authentic selves."

Since dropping on Netflix on Friday, 22 April, fans have been taking to social media to recommend it to others.

One user wrote: "Just finished the Heartstopper live action Netflix show. IT'S SO GOOD OMG THE CASTING IS PERFECT!!"

Another tweeted: "I haven't stopped sobbing since I finished the series is this why they call it Heartstopper?"

Like anything that becomes a hit these days, the demand for a second season has been immediate, with one fan writing: "if Netflix still wants to keep their platform, then they must give the gays what we want and that's Heartstopper season two."

Another wrote: "I don’t care if I have to pay Netflix’s heating bill they WILL make Heartstopper season two."

Is it too soon to start a renewal campaign for #Heartstopper? Because I really want — no, need — season 2. So, watch Heartstopper. Okay thanks bye ❤️🍂#RenewHeartstopper pic.twitter.com/nfqMuJIK0j

A third tweeted: "Is it too soon to ask for a season two of Heartstopper? @NetflixUK like look at those adorable faces how could you not bring them back?"

A fourth wrote: "I just finished Heartstopper what is joy how do i continue life knowing season two hasn't even been confirmed what do I even do."

In a recent interview with Digital Spy, Oseman couldn't confirm whether the show was returning for another, or even multiple seasons. However, she has firm plans for where Heartstopper would head next.

She said: "If we do get future seasons, I'll definitely want to be bringing in the themes of mental health, because that's something that's really important in the books.

"The challenge of writing Heartstopper is exploring those darker issues while keeping the tone so optimistic and hopeful. That has been, like, the struggle of writing it for me the whole way through.

"But I like to think that it's possible. I feel like I have achieved it in the books... so that is very much my goal for the show."
