Wayne Lineker releases statement after being 'knocked out cold' by punch in Ibiza

Wayne Lineker said he feels lucky he wasn't standing further back

Wayne Lineker has addressed a recent incident where he was punched unconscious and the attack was caught on video.

Lineker had been in a video which showed him arguing with some men outside Eden Bar, San Antonio when one of them threw a punch and knocked the 62-year-old out.

He fell to the ground, narrowly avoiding cracking his head against a solid barrier that was behind him, as people went over to check whether he was alright.

Thankfully, Lineker seems to be okay as he's taken to Instagram this morning to give fans an update.

He wrote: "I wanted to write this post to let everyone know that I’m doing ok… I have a few stitches and a swollen lip. It could have been much worse so I count myself very fortunate I wasn’t standing 2 yards further back, as my head would have impacted the wall.

"Obviously the video is very disturbing to see especially for my family. The papers were very accurate and it was a simple case of me just trying to protect a girl from being harassed.

"Thank you everyone for all your messages of concern the support has been really overwhelming."

Witnesses said the argument had started over someone annoying a female friend of Lineker's who was in her 20s, and that he was unconscious for several minutes after the punch.

Lineker had posted to social media previously following the punch, but that was to wish his son a happy birthday.

Naturally, his message was inundated with people who'd seen the footage of him getting knocked out asking how he was, and this new update would appear to show that he's on the mend and counting his lucky stars that he wasn't standing closer to the wall.

There were other messages for the 62-year-old in the comments of his latest post, as people told him they were 'glad you're ok' and 'sending lots of love'.

Others said they hoped the person who threw the punch was caught, after a witness said that police did attend 'but weren't there for long and didn't really do much'.

Lineker, the brother of footballing legend Gary, recently offered Manchester City star Jack Grealish the chance to work at his Ocean Beach club in Ibiza for four weeks after Grealish wasn't picked to be part of England's Euro 2024 squad.

He also claimed that of the famous faces to show up at his club, Conor McGregor and KSI were the biggest spenders.
