Kevin Spacey has performed his first film role since the shocking allegations of sexual assault were first made against him in 2017.

L'uomo Che Disegno Dio, or The Man Who Drew God, which was released in Italy on 5 October, tells the story of an artist charged with sexual abuse.

Spacey played the small part of a police detective who investigates the charges.

Director Franco Nero told ABC News: "I'm very happy Kevin agreed to participate in my film.

"I consider him a great actor and I can't wait to start the movie."

Spacey plays the role of a detective investigating a sexual abuse case.

Spacey failed to comment, according to ABC.

Nero is a veteran of the Hollywood scene and has appeared in films such as Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained and Renny Harlin's Die Hard 2.

He took on the role of the artist who Spacey's character investigates, as well as directing the Italian movie.

The first incidence of controversy for Spacey took place in 2017 when several men working with him at London's Old Vic theatre between 1995 and 2013 claimed his alleged misconduct.

One former Star Trek actor even accused the actor of sexually assaulting him when he was just 14-years-old.

Spacey was then charged with indecent assault on a teenager in the US in 2018 before the charge was dropped.

Director Franco Nero has spoken of how 'happy' he is for Spacey to be a part of his movie.

Spacey has continuously claimed his innocence of all accusations levelled against him.

In one case, a massage therapist died after raising sexual assault allegations against the American Beauty star.

The charge had to be dropped along with a lawsuit relating to the same case.

Only last year an anonymous man filed a lawsuit against the Hollywood actor for alleged sexual abuse in the 1980s when the alleged victim was 14.

A judge ruled the man would have to reveal his identity to proceed with the case.

This movie could potentially be the revival of Spacey's acting career.

During the long string of allegations, the actor has kept a relatively low profile over the last three years apart from tweeting the occasional Christmas message to his followers.

His role in The Man Who Drew God has come after a major career downfall, following him being dropped from the final season of House Of Cards as a result of the yet to be proven allegations.

And in another hit to the Oscar-winner's career, Ridley Scott dropped him from his 2017 crime thriller All The Money In The World.

Christopher Plummer, who died this year, played Spacey's role in the reshot scenes.

The last film Spacey appeared in was Billionaire Boys Club, which had been shot before any of the sexual misconduct allegations were made public.
