Five Guys is known as a fan-favourite in the fast food world.

With its juicy burger patties, golden fries, refillable drinks and delicious milkshakes, what's there not to like?

Well for one, it's known that a meal at the chain will hit your bank account a bit heavier than its competitors.

In fact, there has been a recent outrage on social media as a photo of its 'premium prices' has gone viral, with customers slamming the restaurant as 'out of control'.

Wall Street Silver shared a snap of a receipt from a Five Guys in the US to X, which revealed the prices of each item: a Bacon Cheeseburger priced at $12.49 (£9.83), a small portion of fries for $5.19 (£4.08) and a regular soda for $2.89 (£2.27).

After tax and gratuity, the grand total of this meal for one came to $24.10 (18.97), and the post was captioned: "Five Guys prices are out of control. $24 for one person."

They later added: "Guess I was expecting about $12 to $15 per person for Five Guys. $22 (without tip) just seems to cross a line.

"What is the right amount these days?"

Users online used the comment section to blow off some steam, with one user saying: "$5 for a small fry is highway robbery. It's literally just a potato and some salt. "Fast food becoming a luxury meal is a sign of the times."

Another added: "$5 for a small fry is highway robbery. It's literally just a potato and some salt."

However, many claimed that the heftier price tag was 'worth it'.

Today, a Bacon Cheeseburger in the UK will set you back £11.95 for reference, but why is it so much more than other fast food chains?

Well who better than Five Guys' CEO Jerry Murrell to explain the company's pricing structure.

He previously revealed: "Our food prices fluctuate.

"We do not base our price on anything but margins.

"We raise our prices to reflect whatever our food costs are.

"So, if the mayonnaise guy triples his price, we pay triple for the mayonnaise! And then we'll increase the price of our product."

Though people have also attributed the extra costs to factors such as its 15 free available toppings, fresh ingredients, peanut oil-cooked chips or its larger than average portion sizes.

Behavioural science expert Rory Sutherland spoke about the topic in a TikTok clip too, saying: "Five Guys is an interesting one because no one would have thought you could charge $10 for a burger in an environment that is no more exotic than a McDonald's, right?"

He then highlighted that the deal you're getting might actually be better: "If you delve a bit deeper, the burger and the shake - the two signature items - are the only things that are expensive.

"You get free drinks refills, you get an extra scoop of fries for free, you get free peanuts. All the toppings on the burger are entirely free, regardless of how many of them you want."
