A chef who worked at McDonald's has revealed the 'healthiest' item you can order.

We know, that more or less defeats the purpose of treating yourself to the lip-smacking prospect of a Maccies, but what if you're looking to keep the calories low while treating yourself to a cheat meal?

A former chef from the American franchise has admitted that the 'healthiest' item to order is a popular choice.

Before you start wondering, the answer isn't a salad, a fruit bag, or one of the vegan options - it's actually one of the main menu items.

While McDonald's are known to change their menu fairly often, adding and discarding items every few months, this item is one of the mainstays and is available all year round.

Mike Haracz, a former McDonald's corporate chef, has a following of over 331,000 on TikTok, where he makes food-related content.

He revealed that the single healthiest thing you can order is a custom order from the breakfast menu.

Speaking in a recent video, the chef was asked about the food item on the menu that had 'lower calories, lower cholesterol, and lower saturated fat'.

He surprisingly added that 'most of the items on the menu have these things', but said that if you started to make some changes, you would get the healthiest option available.

The order is an Egg McMuffin with no butter in it, according to the former chef.

Reiterating that it 'would probably be the healthiest', Haracz went on: “You’ve got one egg, which is 70 calories, one slice of Canadian bacon, which is lean protein.

“Yes, I want to keep a little cheese on there so its got some kind of flavour, and then you have the English muffin, which I believe is the lowest calorie carrier that you have.”

It's really that simple, and sounds equally as delicious as other items on the menu - all without the slight feeling of guilt you might have after noshing down on three hash browns.

While he worked in the US division, which had an Egg McMuffin with no butter or cheese listed between 274-280 calories, down from the original 310, the UK option was even lower than that.

On this side of the pond, an Egg and Cheese McMuffin is listed at 295 calories ordinarily, but taking the butter and cheese out puts it in the 230-280 range.

For alternative 'low calorie' options, the former Maccies worker recommended getting the Big Breakfast without pancakes.

He noted that while you can 'adjust the menu' with requests, most of them 'are probably not as tasty as what's on the menu currently'.
