Man spends thousands turning himself into Guillermo Del Toro's most outlandish character
A man dubbed the ‘Amphibian Project’ has parted with thousands of dollars and put himself through some extreme body modifications to create his unique look.
Hailing from Aguascalientes, Mexico, the tattoo-loving chef first had his interest piqued by body modifications when he was just 13 years old but said that at that point it ‘felt like an impossible dream’.
However, as an adult, he decided to make that dream come true and after dabbling with some smaller tattoos and facial piercings, he decided to get his first proper body modification, choosing to have his tongue split in a painful procedure.
Speaking to LADbible, he said: “I liked how it looked. It’s something shocking but at the same time discreet.”

From there, he was hooked and has since turned to more and more extreme modifications.
Amphibian Project, whose real name is Jesus, shared: “The most extreme, I think, is removing two fingers - one from each hand.”
Despite being two digits down, he says it does not hold him back at work and reckons he is just as skilful as any chef who has the full 10.
As for the pain-factor, he told LADbible that having his tongue split was ‘the most painful of all’, but that having his nose removed was an ‘extensive process’ due to a mistake from the person who carried it out, which left him with a ‘very complicated and time-consuming’ situation to sort out.
Thankfully, he was able to enlist the help of body modification expert Gattoo Moreno to fix his nose and is now happy with how it turned out.
While Amphibian Project is pleased with his head-turning look, he did admit that not everyone in his life has got on board with it, and said that some friends and family members have turned their backs on him as they don’t agree with his mods.
Despite all of this, he says that he’s never scared or worried before getting a new body modification.
More recently, he has been working with Gattoo Moreno and has based his look around The Amphibian Man from the 2017 Oscar-winning Guillermo del Toro flick The Shape of Water.
In the movie, a janitor (played by Sally Hawkins) working at a top-secret facility in the US during the Cold War discovers a humanoid amphibian (played by Doug Jones) and falls in love with him.
The movie does not have a happy ending for the Amphibian Man, but for the Amphibian Project the future is looking a lot brighter as he works closely with a tattoo artist to help recreate the character’s unusual look.
As well as continuing with extensive tattoo work to make him look more like the The Amphibian Man, he’s also considering having the bifurcation of his testicles, which basically means having them split. Ouch.
In total, he reckons he’s spent around 300,000 to 400,000 Mexican pesos, about £12,780 to £17,040 - and, of course, he’s not finished yet.
In fact, when it comes to body modifications, he says: “There are no rules, there is no limit.”
