We've got a lot to thank modern technology for, but often we overlook just how great and complex it can be.

Amazon's Alexa has saved a woman's life after it called police while her boyfriend beat her, Metro reports.

Twenty-eight-year-old Eduardo Barros accused his girlfriend of cheating on him while housesitting in Tijeras, New Mexico, and began brandishing a gun, threatening to kill her while her daughter was in the house. He began to ask her: "Did you call the sheriffs?"

His words were picked up by Alexa's voice recognition, assuming it was being asked the question and dialed 911, getting through to Bernallillo County Sheriff's Department.

"The unexpected use of this new technology to contact emergency services has possibly helped save a life," Bernalillo County Sheriff Manuel Gonzales III said in a statement. "This amazing technology definitely helped save a mother and her child from a very violent situation."

Police quickly arrived on the scene, according to Bernallillo County Sheriff's Department Deputy Felicia Romero, removing the woman who'd been injured in an attack with a 9mm handgun and had been kicked.

"When 911 called her phone, Barros saw the caller ID and threw [her] to the floor. Barros then kicked her while on the ground at least 10 times in the face and stomach," an arrest warrant statement said of the incident, according to the New York Post.

"Barros told [the victim] he could not believe the cops had been called and he was not going back to prison and that she knew he was a felon. [The victim] stated she thought she was going to be killed or shot."

Barros has been charged with possession of a firearm or destructive device by a felon, aggravated battery against a household member, aggravated assault against a household member and false imprisonment, according to court documents obtained by ABC News.

This is truly remarkable.
