An adorable dog who was hacked by her owner before being buried alive and left for dead has made an incredible recovery.

Leialoha was rescued from a beach in O'ahu beach in Hawaii in July and rushed to see a vet who said the poor pooch was 'incredibly swollen, sunburnt and missing 90 percent of her fur' according to animal rescue group PAWS Hawaii.

They also spotted a number of lacerations to her front legs. She was treated at Aloha Affordable Veterinary Services for 'severe skin disease and dehydration'.

A beachgoer saw a man burying the dog before leaving, so called PAWS Hawaii, who rushed out to rescue the animal.

Thankfully, the sad story has a happy ending - as little Leialoha was fostered by a woman called Amanda who has been helping the dog recover and is now ready to leave for her a brand new home.

Speaking in July, Amanda said: "Earlier this week, I was scrolling FB, while the girls were getting haircuts and saw that there was a dog on the westside of Oahu that had been buried in the sand and been cut on her leg with a machete.

"She was badly sunburned, covered in sores, and missing most of her fur.

"My heart was broken, and I knew she needed us to foster her. Leialoha has come so far since Tuesday night. Initially, she would only leave her kennel to go to the bathroom.

"Last night, she came out, while we had friends over to see what was for dinner and has been liking being under the coffee table. She has a long way to go, but the worst is over. Say aloha to Leia!"

Amanda has been sharing updates and photos of Leialoha and you'll all be pleased to know she's looking a lot happier and looks to have made a solid recovery.

One of the more recent updates shows the dog all ready to go off to her 'forever home' and she looks pretty delighted about the whole thing.

She's also been immortalised on a range of t-shirts, with all proceeds going to support the excellent work carried out by PAWS of Hawaii - if you want one, you can check them out here.
