Driver Makes His Dog Sit On The Roof Of His Car

A dog has been spotted riding around on its owner's roof, as captured in the astonishing footage below:

The video shows the black dog sat patiently on top of its owner's motor in the streets of Leshan, in the south-western Sichuan Province, China.

According to The Daily Mail, the unnamed driver later told police that he had no other option but to put his dog on the roof as there was simply no room left in the back seat.

He also claimed that there was no danger of the dog falling onto the road as it was 'well trained'.

A clip of the driver's journey through the city was shared by the Leshan Traffic Police yesterday (22 April), showing the poor pooch balancing on top of the car while pedestrians look on.

At one point in the video, the driver even has to stop to let the dog rebalance itself after it slips.

Police later received an anonymous tip-off, informing them of the incident.

The dog's owner was eventually tracked down and quizzed about it all - telling officers that there just wasn't any room for the dog inside the car.

He is reported to have said: "I was worried that the dog would suffocate being inside the trunk, but I had stuff piled in the backseat that day."

A police officer reportedly asked: "How can you make sure that it wouldn't jump off the car?"

The driver replied: "That dog is well trained."

However, he did go on to concede that perhaps it wasn't the best way of treating a pet, adding: "After that day, I thought that something wasn't right about this."

Earlier this month, Shenzhen became the first Chinese city to ban the human consumption of dog and cat meat, with both cities planning on bringing the new laws in from 1 May.

Speaking at the time, a spokesperson for the Shenzhen government said: "Dogs and cats as pets have established a much closer relationship with humans than all other animals, and banning the consumption of dogs and cats and other pets is a common practice in developed countries and in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

"This ban also responds to the demand and spirit of human civilisation."

A couple of weeks later, Zhuhai followed suit, banning the consumption of dog and cat meat.

The city, with a population of 1.7 million, announced the new rules in line with a government proposal, which says dogs should be viewed as 'companion animals'.

The government announced that dogs should not be viewed as livestock, but as pets.
