Everyone loves a sleepy pupper, right? Well, check out this one - a police dog that hilariously slept throughout its swearing-in ceremony.

A swearing-in ceremony is a really important moment for anyone who is about to become part of a community, job, role or position.

A good tip for anyone who's in the spotlight for one of these events is to be alert and responsive.

However, it can be difficult to ensure that will happen if you're dealing with animals - and a puppy, no less.

That's what's happened with an American police force after it organised a ceremony to welcome a therapy puppy called Brody.

When he was placed on the Chief's desk for the big moment, he got so comfortable that he dozed off and let the adults have all the fun.

The 12-week-old chocolate Labrador puppy was being welcomed to Bristol Police Department in Rhode Island.

The force wanted to employ a new K-9, potentially for drug sniffing or maybe even for the bomb squad.

However, authorities eventually settled on getting a therapy comfort dog.

Brody's handler Officer Keith Medeiros told The Dodo: "He plays really hard and he sleeps really hard.

"When he's not playing, he's sleeping, which is kind of tough because he sleeps a lot."

His swearing-in ceremony wasn't much different and Keith had to do the honours and take the oath.

"We put him down on the desk and he was just so comfortable that he lay down and fell asleep," Officer Mederios said.

Therapy dogs can mean the world of difference for officers who are dealing with hectic and distressing incidents nearly every day.

They've been used to help veterans, people with PTSD, the elderly and children who are in hospital.

Officer Mederios is hopeful that Brody will be able to provide the same type of love and affection for his team.

"Just by walking in the police department with Brody, people immediately smile, they immediately get into a better place," he said. "They want to pet him, want to hug him and it's just a really good thing."

He's been getting Brody to interact with different members of the force, while practising social distance. The more people he gets introduced to the better as it will help with his socialisation skills.

The Bristol Police Department uploaded a video of the adorable swearing-in ceremony to social media, where it's been seen by tens of thousands of people.

Welcome to the team, Brody.
