As millions gear up to celebrate Thanksgiving today, several prisons across the pond have given an insight into what some of the most notorious prisoners in the US will be served up to mark the occasion.

It's one of the biggest holidays in America, a time when family members get together and reflect on the positives of the last year after gorging on a home-cooked feast. But what does Thanksgiving look like for US citizens who currently reside in the slammer?

According to estimated figures from Statista, there are 1.8 million people currently either awaiting trial or serving a sentence behind bars in America. This figure includes notable names such as Sean 'Diddy' Combs, Ghislaine Maxwell, R. Kelly and Luigi Mangione.

But major holidays don't cease to exist when you step behind bars either, so this is what today's (27 November) Thanksgiving meal will look like for anyone currently locked up in the States.

According to an article from The New York Post, prison facilities Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center, Fort Dix and Federal Prison Camp Bryan, have all disclosed what inmates can expect to find on their plates.

What Thanksgiving dinner looks like inside a US prison

Kicking things off at New Jersey's Fort Dix, where disgraced hip hop mogul Combs is serving a four-year sentence for transportation to engage in prostitution, Thanksgiving dinner will feature the traditional roast turkey as well as cornbread dressing, baked sweet potato, mashed potatoes and chicken gravy. There will also be dessert on offer, which is fruit or an ambiguous 'holiday dessert'.

Which isn't a bad meal, all things considered.

Meanwhile, Mangione, who is currently awaiting trial after being accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, will be receiving a more modest meal of roast turkey, mashed potatoes and brown gravy at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center.

Heading over to Federal Prison Camp Bryan, where Maxwell, the associate of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, currently resides alongside disgraced entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes and ex-reality star Jennifer Shah, the meal is arguably the best of the bunch.

As well as the standard roast turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, inmates can also tuck into ham, green beans, dinner rolls, cranberry sauce and an assortment of pies.

As for vegetarians and those with dietary requirements, there will also be a number of alternate offerings such as tofu, soy chicken and a slightly less festive veggie stir fry.

So none of the infamous Thanksgiving dishes, such as jello salad, sweet potato and marshmallow bake, ambrosia salad or bologna cake, but the basics are all there.

Meanwhile, Business Insider revealed the majority of inmates, famous or not, will all be forced to eat their dinners with sporks, as giving out knives creates a risk of them being used as weapons.

The article also confirmed that the majority of prisoners, bar the most trusted inmates, would be getting pre-sliced turkey on their plates, as bones also pose a weapon risk.

As for the time in which dinner is served, this could be as early as 11.00am in some facilities, meaning inmates will be having a Thanksgiving brunch instead of a Thanksgiving dinner.
