Man who showed ‘terrifying’ reality after dropping GoPro off cruise ship shares ‘truth’ behind footage

A man who shook up the internet with his terrifying video of what it's like beneath a cruise ship has dropped all the details behind the footage.

The ocean is both awe-inspiring and terrifying. The sea covers approximately 70 percent of Earth’s surface, but we've only charted around 27 percent of the seafloor thanks to modern tech.

That means there's a lot we don't know (and many of us don't want to know, thank you). One person who let curiosity get the better of them decided to test out what happens in the water when no one is around to witness it.

Odysseas Froilan posted a YouTube video of what he captured when he dropped a GoPro from the side of a cruise ship back in 2021, and it makes for eerie viewing.

As the camera sinks, it spins as it tumbles to the bottom of the ocean and captures fish swimming around it, before it comes to rest on the seabed next to the ship's anchor.

Various fish can be seen in shot but everything seems normal so far, until it switches to the footage caught at night.

With night mode kicking in, something reminiscent of Jaws sets in as we see a shark floating around the camera in the darkness.

Recently, the poster shared some insights into how he got the footage, which has since gone viral, and amassed more than 11 million views since he posted it almost four years ago.

Froilan revealed that he was on a cruise ship during the pandemic and had more time than usual to get his project underway.

He wrote on YouTube: "We were at the Bahamas Sea during Covid lockdown so the ship was on anchorage for a long time.

"That allowed the sand to settle and get that clear images and also the fish to be attracted by the shadow of the ship and the food that the anchor chain was providing by moving the sand."

People were also curious about how managed to set it all up, to which he replied: "I used a GoPro case to withstand the pressure and some simple stabilisers that I made in order to prevent the rolling of the camera.

"For the same reason, I was waiting for a day with no wind and current. The GoPro was attached to a fishing line so I was able to feel the bottom of the sea. But I could check the footage only once I was bringing the camera up again."

Viewers loved the content, with one person saying: "I love how the fish immediately come to investigate what just dropped in the water."

Another wrote: "Whoever had the idea of dropping a GoPro in the sea off an anchored cruise ship in the middle of the ocean, well done Sir! Brilliant idea! One of the best random recommendations YouTube ever gave me!"

Froilan also revealed that he hadn't intended to share the results of his footage but changed his mind once seeing the clip. He continued: "Initially I started filming to see what was happening down there but the footage was so cool, I had to share."

At least we're all watching from the safety of a screen.
