A gruesome simulation has detailed exactly what happens when you develop one of the most painful conditions in your backside.
Spend a good deal of your day sitting or are unfortunate enough to have a particularly hairy bottom?
Then I have some bad news for you, as you may be at risk of developing a pilonidal cyst.
What is a pilonidal cyst?
According to the NHS, the pilonidal sinus is a small or tunnel which is located at the top of the bottom, in between the buttocks.
Not all of us have one, it's estimated that around 26 in 100,000 in the UK people have a pilonidal sinus, and are most common in teenagers and young adults.

For those who have one, it's likely that you'll likely go about your daily lives without knowing it event exists – that is until it gets infected.

What causes an infected pilonidal cyst?
The pilonidal sinus becomes infected when loose hairs, dead skin or bacteria find its way into the passage and get stuck. Mayo Clinic adds that friction, tight skin, cycling and spending long periods of time sitting can lead to hair and other debris entering the cavity.
In response to the buildup the body attempts to flush the debris out, which leads to the creation of a cyst in the area.
Symptoms of an infected pilonidal cyst include:
- pain and swelling at the top of the bottom, in between the buttocks
- a pus-filled bump developing in the area
- finding it painful to sit down
Should you have a pilonidal cyst which becomes inflamed and infected then it's best to see your GP, as there are a range of treatments for it.

What is the treatment for a pilonidal cyst – and how painful is it?
As well as painkillers and antibiotics for infection, treatment for a pilonidal cyst can also include an incision and drainage.
This is explained in excruciating detail in a simulation shared by Dr Sooj on YouTube. In the video he describes the cyst as 'disgustingly painful' before revealing how a typical incision and drainage procedure takes place.
This includes removing the trapped hair before irrigating the area with a sterile solution.
For patients who get repeated infections, a laser endoscope is used to seal the passage.

The simulation, and the treat of getting an inflamed cyst in the most unfortunate region, is one which left viewers well and truly terrified for their backsides.
"New fear unlocked because I'm hairy and i sit for prolonged periods of time," wrote one person, while a second wrote: "The more I discover about the human body the more I am in awe and disgust."
"The way I immediately stood up when he said “people who sit for prolonged periods of time," added a third.
