Neurologist explains why viral 'hair clip' migraine hack could actually be legitimate

There's actually some science behind it

Migraines are something that plague a lot of us on a regular basis but sometimes the internet comes up with weird and wonderful ways of solving your problems.

Whether it's a health hack that helps you to poop or fall asleep straight away (I wouldn't recommend doing these simultaneously), or a simple technique to extend your life, the internet and doctors are always keen to offer advice.

Now, I wouldn't recommend following all the techniques and tricks you hear about online, particularly if it's anything to do with a carnivore diet; doctors usually know best.

But Elie Sader, a US-based neurologist who goes by Dr Painkiller on YouTube, has explained why using a hair clip on your eyebrows might be a genuine method for alleviating the pain of a migraine.

For those of you who are lucky not to have experienced one, a migraine is an intense headache which can be accompanied by feelings of nausea, vomiting and even sensitivity to light and sound. So, basically, just think of having a horrible hangover, without even having had a drink.

The hack has been widely shared on TikTok in recent months by people insisting that it's the best, almost-natural way of getting rid of your splitting headaches.

It turns out that there's actually a lot of science behind why it works so well, and Dr Sader explained exactly why using the clips could be your best hope when painkillers might be off the table.

He explained: "People are putting clips over their eyebrows when they're having migraines, and they claim that helps to alleviate their pain. So is that legit or not?

"Above the eye, you have a couple of nerves called the supra-orbital nerve and another smaller one which is called supra-trochlear nerve.

"Essentially, those are both branches of V1, which is one of the main branches of the trigeminal nerve. These branches are implicated in some migraines, they're not implicated in all migraines. Some people get migraines in the front, some in the temple, some in the back of the head.

"For people who actually get migraines in the front, this nerve can be implicated. Alleviating the pressure on that nerve can actually help with the pressure of the headaches.

"When you are alleviating some of that muscle tension that is tugging on the nerve, that can potentially help with alleviating the pain."

He went on to explain how Botox injections can be used in a lot of cases when people get common migraines, but for those of you who want to avoid getting that treatment, then hair clips may well be a quicker and cheaper alternative.
