At Christmas, people travel far and wide to be with their family and friends, but when that's not possible it can be truly heartbreaking.

So when one dad found out he wouldn't be able to spend the festive period with his daughter, he went the extra (air) mile to be with her no matter what.

Hal's daughter Pierce Vaughan is a flight attendant for Delta Airlines and during one of the busiest times of the year for travelling she had to work on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

So, what did the savvy father do?

Well in a true light-bulb moment he thought if the she can't be with him then he would be with her and jumped on the same flight that Pierce was attending on, heading from Florida, to Detroit, to Massachusetts.

For one leg of Hal's marathon Christmas flight he was sat next to a man named Mike Levy, who, after listening to the doting dad's incredible story, decided to take a few snaps and share it with his friends on Facebook, on December 24.

In the post - which has since been shared more than 27,000 times and had more than 135,000 likes - Mike praised Hal for being such a great father and doing all he could to be with his kid at the special time of year.

Mike wrote: "I had the pleasure of sitting next to Hal on my flight back home. His daughter Pierce was our flight attendant who had to work over Christmas. Hal decided he would spend the holiday with her. So, he is flying on each of her flights today and tomorrow around the country to spend time with his daughter for Christmas. What a fantastic father! Wish you both a very Merry Christmas! "

A perk of having a relative working at Delta is that family members can get reduced tickets, a benefit that Hal took advantage of in order to be with his daughter.

Hal and Mike bumped into each other during their flight to Detroit.

The next day the shocked Pierce shared Mike's post with her mum, letting her know that Hal had finally made it safely to his destination and thanked staff for being so nice about everything.

Hal also managed to get moved up to First Class for part of his journey.

She wrote: "Look ma we made it Kimberly Hal Vaughan.

"Dad's first trip using his benefits was a success! A special thanks to all of the patient, wonderful gate agents around the country and my perfect crew. He made it on every flight and even got first class RSW-DTW (Christmas miracle).

"Shoutout to Mike Levy for being a great first class passenger & helping us to understand how cool this actually is!"

Absolutely outstanding effort, Hal.
