Actor Ed Asner has died, aged 91.

He had a career spanning from the late 1950s and has projects that haven't even been released yet.

His family has released a statement on social media.

"We are sorry to say that our beloved patriarch passed away this morning peacefully. Words cannot express the sadness we feel. With a kiss on your head- Goodnight dad. We love you," they said.

Despite having more than 300 acting credits to his name, he told the Associated Press back in 2009 that he felt he could have done more.

"I never get enough work. It's the history of my career. There just isn't anything to turn down, let me put it that way," he said.

"I'd say most people are probably in that same boat, old people, and it's a shame," he said.
