When you start learning the difference between your left and right, one of the easiest tricks is to stick your thumb and index finger out as far as possible.
Whichever hand ends up making the correct L shape is left.
But, if you can't be bothered to stretch out your digits then just do what this Canberra woman decided to get done.

The 23-year-old thought it would be fun to have a L and R tattooed on her respective hands to be a constant reminder of her left and right.
It might be an easy thing to remember which is which for many, however the ACT local struggled with it for years.
D'Kodia Laine told the Daily Mail that she used the all-important thumb and index flex for years and it always attracted the wrong kind of attention.

"My friends would joke about how silly it looks having an adult make the L shape with your hands to differentiate," she said.
But it escalated when she was nominated to be the navigator during a scavenger hunt.
Only the most adept in finding their way through a map or set of directions should be allocated this position and it was safe to say that Ms Laine was out of her depth.
She ended up giving the wrong direction to the driver several times, until they ended up drawing a L and R on her hands to make it easier. That's when a lightbulb went off in her head.
"It started as a joke but it's actually super useful and I don't look dumb making an L with my fingers to figure it out," she told the Daily Mail.

So she decided to get the ink permanent at Sydney studio Hunter and Fox Tattoo.
The end result is a simple, elegant and pretty cool reminder of which way is left and which way is right.
If she ends up committing the directions to memory, it could always be turned into a classic tattoo metaphor on direction like 'always know where you're going' or something like that.
Tattoo artist Lauren Winzer wrote in a now viral post on Instagram: "Not only are tattoos cute, but they can also be super functional !!! Good luck with all ur future directions happy to help guide you."

Dozens of people have tagged their mates or admitted they could use a similar type of branding to help them remember.
