A date has been set for when Britain will have a new Prime Minister.

Following Boris Johnson's resignation, citizens of the UK will still have to wait a while for the new government leader to step up.

Sir Graham Brady has said that the final result of the contest should be announced on 5 September after a run-off between the final two candidates in a postal ballot of party members.

The first ballot of Tory MPs in the election of a new leader will take place on Wednesday with candidates requiring the support of 20 MPs to stand, according to Sir Graham, the chairman of the 1922 Committee.

Tory MPs fighting to take the spot include Penny Mordaunt, Sajid Javid, Jeremy Hunt, Grant Shapps, Nadhim Zahawi, Kemi Badenoch, Suella Braverman, Tom Tugendhat and Rishi Sunak.

Sir Graham has explained how nominations to be leader of the party will close on Tuesday, while the first ballot will begin the next day. Candidates will be expected to have 20 supporters to be in the running, including their proposer and seconder.

However, candidates must win over at least 30 votes from colleagues to progress, with a second ballot planned for Thursday.

If the number of candidates has not then been whittled down to just two, ballots are expected to begin again on Monday next week.
