Plane journeys can be less-than-ideal at the best of times, particularly if there's someone snoring loudly beside you or being sick into a paper bag.

But I think we can all agree one of the biggest cardinal sins when it comes to air travel is flatulence - something that's never welcome when you're soaring through the air in a metal container, where you can't exactly crack a window to get rid of any foul smells.

Well, Shreddies - the company that gave us the fart-filtering underwear of the same name - now has a new product for those who might need to pass wind on a plane without wanting to upset those around them.

The Shreddies Carbonana is a banana-shaped foam insert that has been designed to filter flatulence odours, which comes in black and nude.

Better still, you can even wash it after use so that it can be worn again.

The product is the brainchild of Shreddies owner Paul O'Leary, a British designer who came up with the idea after a slightly pongy experience while flying to New York.

O'Leary, whose firm is based in Cotes near Loughborough, Leicestershire, realised that the carbon in the original Shreddies fart-filtering products tended to confuse airport scanners, meaning you either had to remove them before going through security or face some an unwelcome frisk.

His solution was the removeable banana pad, which can simply be slipped out from your underwear and replaced as you board the plane.

Shreddies' managing director Richard Woolley said: "This is a real game changer for air travel."

He added: "The Carbonana will improve passenger comfort for all on board."

While doing research for the new product, Shreddies consulted gastroenterologist Niket Sonpal, who said planes become pressurised from 6,000-8,000ft.

This, in turn, causes swelling of the gases in the body and in turn causes excess flatulence.

Sonpal said: "Air expands at higher altitudes, gas in our intestines expands too, up to 30 percent more than usual, and that air needs to go somewhere."

Founded by O'Leary back in 2009, Shreddies sells a range of fart-filtering products, from pyjamas, underwear and jeans through to cushions.
