Hundreds of people ducked or ran for cover as the gunman behind the Las Vegas attack rained bullets down on people at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival. However, one fearless person has been pictured standing up and giving the mass murderer the finger.

He held his defiant stance until the gunman opened fire again before bending down to shield himself from the barrage of bullets.

In the bizarre footage, a person can be heard yelling 'get the fuck down' to the man in the black singlet.

The video also illustrates the firepower that the gunman, named as Stephen Paddock, had in his arsenal. The latest police update puts the death toll from the Vegas attack at 58 with 515 suffering various injuries. That puts this as the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.

Paddock was shooting from the 32nd window of a room at the Mandalay Hotel, but took his own life before law enforcement could arrive. They reportedly found at least 10 rifles inside the room.

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack, however local law enforcement agencies say they've found no connection between Paddock and an international terrorist group.

Sheriff Joseph Lombardo says it will take some time to get to the bottom of what sparked the attack: "We have to establish what his motivation was first. There's motivating factors associated with terrorism other than a distraught person just intending to cause mass casualties.

"Before we label with that, it'll be a matter of process."

The shooter's brother, Eric, has told CNN: "He was my brother and it's like an asteroid fell out of the sky."

The 64-year-old had no criminal history and was a licensed hunter and private pilot, living in Mesquite, which is about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

Mesquite police spokesman Quinn Averett says: "What's unique for us is the gunman, the shooter, and the person with him, we in the Mesquite Police Department have not had any contact with these people in the past. We haven't had any traffic stops, any law enforcement contact, no arrests or nothing."

Mr Averett confirmed that weapons and ammunition had been found in Paddock's Mesquite home but couldn't elaborate on the number or type.

Responding to the incident on Twitter, the US President, Donald Trump wrote: "My warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible Las Vegas shooting. God bless you!"
