We are well into the depths of January now, so for the vast majority of people that means going to work when it's still dark, getting home when it's dark, and not having a penny to their name.

So wouldn't it be great if you won some money? Of course it would - free money is the best, no matter how much or how little.

And one man showed just how true that is when he decided to go big after he won the princely sum of $1 on a lottery scratchcard.

That may not sound like a jackpot - but Tyler Heep from Urbandale, in Iowa, still wanted to celebrate like a high roller and demanded that he was given a giant cheque to mark the special occasion.

Lucky Tyler went down to the lottery HQ in Des Moines and asked them to present his winnings on the oversized cheque.

Tyler said he didn't know why no one had done it before.

In a post to Facebook, the winner wrote: "I told them I'd like one of those big ceremonial checks as payment. I figured it would be worth a shot and they all thought it was really funny. I'm surprised nobody else has done this before."

Being good sports, staff at the lottery granted Tyler's wish and presented him with the novelty cheque, which he then posed for a picture with.

Speaking to NBC 13 News, Tyler said he was treated like a baller.

He said: "They decided to treat me just like a million dollar winner. The guy came down the stairs and they took me into the back room where the camera was with the Iowa Lottery logo.

A company has agreed to frame the giant cheque for free so Tyler can hang it up.

"Sure enough they wrote me the one dollar check and had me hold it up and took the picture."

And according to reports, it didn't take long for Tyler to go out and blow his winnings - revealing that he'd splashed out on a 'half of a gallon of gas', last week.

Local framing firm, Benjamin's Custom Framing and Fine Art, has now even offered to frame the giant novelty cheque for free so Tyler can put it on display in his home.

Tyler thanked the company on his Facebook page. He wrote: "Thanks to The Art of Benjamin B. Purvis and his custom framing shop for offering to frame my big one dollar lottery check. His artwork is fantastic."

It just goes to show that you can make a lot out of a little.
