Jordan Henderson’s dad has revealed the Brentford FC midfielder’s injury is more serious than we first thought.

As England celebrated its historic World Cup win over Mexico on Sunday (5 July), but the celebrations were marred after Henderson ended up injuring himself, being given oxygen and stretchered off.

Despite not playing in the match, Henderson suffered a fall during the celebrations. After his teammate Dan Burn leaped over an advertising hoarding, Henderson followed after him and landed awkwardly.

His father Brian Henderson told the Daily Mail he was watching at home and initially thought it was nothing serious.

But it quickly became apparent that Jordan had really hurt himself, with England manager Thomas Tuchel telling the BBC: “It looks really bad.

"It's a quite serious injury and it doesn't fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. The doctor told me he is in hospital."

Alarm bells ringing, Brian called Jordan’s PA in a panic for an update on his condition.

He said: “I was up all night waiting to hear the news.

“It's just a waiting game now.”

Jordan did not travel back to Kansas City from Mexico with the rest of the England squad and has now been ruled out of the rest of the tournament, spending a total of just six minutes on the pitch during the final portion of England’s group stage clash with Panama.

World Cup rules state England cannot call up a replacement, and with Jarell Quansah also sitting out Saturday’s quarter-final match against Norway, it puts Tuchel’s side in a tricky spot.

Explaining more details of his son’s injury, Brian said: “It's his left forearm - he's just completely smashed it.

“He's going to have a cast on and then it depends on what the experts say.”

Henderson is due for surgery when he returns to the US from Mexico, but then will be staying to cheer on his teammates, where he’ll be joined by his dad and his step-mum.

Following his disappointing World Cup exit, Henderson spoke out yesterday (7 July) to thank fans for their ‘support’.

He wrote: “A night to remember that’s for sure!

"What an incredible performance against all the different challenges. So proud to be a part of this special team.

“Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday.”
