The World Cup has come under threat from a group of hackers who claim they've got control of drones the FBI use for facial recognition.

L'Equipe reports that Iranian organisation Handala is claiming they've acquired 'every image and every suspect' the American police drones have taken for the past few months.

A statement from the Iranian organisation published by The SITE Intelligence Group carried the threat that the World Cup would need better security.

They said: "You'd better tighten security at your World Cup; we really don't like some of these teams. Remember: FPV drones are everywhere; you never know when one might end up on your team bus."

SITE noted that the claims from the hackers should be taken with caution, as they said at least one of the videos published as evidence the drones had been hacked appeared to have come from a 2024 piece of footage showing the aftermath of tornado damage.

Handala previously claimed they'd got into FBI Director Kash Patel's email account, and the US State Department have offered rewards of up to $10 million for information that would lead to members of the group being identified.

Iran is one of the 48 countries playing at the World Cup, which is being hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico.

This is despite the US currently being at war with Iran and a tentative ceasefire between the two countries ending in recent days as missile strikes resumed.

The Iranian national team plays all of their group games in the US and had been planning to establish their training base in Tucson, Arizona, but they've had to relocate to Mexico.

Some staff members accompanying the Iranian footballers have been denied entry into the US, as have travelling fans.
