Tinder is introducing facial recognition technology in a landmark move to clamp down on fake profiles on the app.
Ever get that sinking feeling that a new match of yours may just be a little too good to be true? You're probably not the only one who's been in that situation.
After all, we've all seen at least one episode of MTV's Catfish over the years.
Fortunately the boffins over at Tinder have come up with a new way to clamp down on the ability for someone to set up a fake profile with its rollout of Face Check in the UK.

The announcement follows recent research from the dating app which revealed that 63 percent of 18 to 24-year-olds say scams are now harder to spot than ever.

What is Tinder Face Check – and how does it work?
Unveiled today (March 26), Tinder Face Check is a new facial verification feature which will be mandatory to all app users in the UK, with the move aimed at building greater trust amongst its user base.
The feature works by prompting users to record a short video selfie within the app. This will confirm that the user is real and that their faces matches the photographs uploaded to the profile.
Once a user scans their face and has it matched to their images their account will receive a 'Tinder’s Photo Verified badge' telling other users they've been authenticated by the app.
Which certainly minimises the risk of getting to bar and finding out that your date has been very generous with using AI on their images.
Not only this, but the app will also notify users if their face is being used across numerous accounts, in order to combat impersonation.
The move means that Tinder is the first online dating app which utilises the mandatory live facial recognition, a landmark move for online security.
"Face Check is the most measurably impactful safety feature I’ve seen in my career," said of the move.

"It helps tackle one of the hardest problems online, knowing whether someone is real, in a way that feels seamless and effective for real users, while adding meaningful obstacles that are difficult for bad actors to circumvent. It sets a new benchmark for trust and safety across the dating industry."
The update will bring the UK in line with countries such as the US, Canada, Australia and India and is one of many new safety features which the app has introduced recently.
Unveiled at the Tinder Sparks 2026: Start Something New keynote event, the app introduced a range of AI-driven safety features aimed to detect harmful language used in messages and auto-blur on images.
