After completing 100 laps of his back garden in Bedfordshire, and raising nearly £30m ($37m) for NHS charities in the process, Captain Tom Moore celebrates his 100th birthday today.

Captain Tom has captured the hearts of the nation with his exploits in recent weeks, and it seems as if the public - as well as many other organisations - are keen to show the Second World War veteran some love.

In fact, this milestone birthday is to be marked with a flypast from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Well, if the weather will allow it, anyway.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the BBMF fleet, which includes six Spitfires and a Lancaster bomber, is based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, and will pass over Tom's home in salute to his incredible fundraising efforts.

A spokesperson from the MoD said that 'weather permitting' they'd like to 'celebrate Captain Tom's birthday and mark his amazing fundraising achievement'.

He continued: "The great British public is encouraged to follow Captain Tom's disciplined example and not gather to watch the flypast but continue following PHE (Public Health England) guidelines on social distancing."

As well as that, more than 125,000 birthday cards have been sent for Moore, who also recently became the oldest person to achieve a UK number one single with a version of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' performed with Michael Ball.

Among those to send greetings cards are the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, England football captain Harry Kane, and Dame Kelly Holmes.

The cards have been set up and completely fill up the hall at Bedford School, near to Tom's home in Marston Moretaine.

Being a humble chap, Tom thanked everyone for their best wishes on his special day, but asked that people direct their gifts towards sufferers from Covid-19.

He said: "I continue to be offered lots of lovely items. I really do have everything I need but others are struggling due to Covid-19 so, rather than giving to me, please look to donate these generous offers to a local care home or someone in your community. Thank you."

Moore has also been honoured with a portrait painted by royal portrait artist Darren Baker, who also presented him with a sketch of Tom's home town of Keighley in West Yorkshire.

Baker, who is himself from nearby Huddersfield, said: "We chatted for ages about Yorkshire,

"He was over the moon - his smile is as warm as his heart."

Well, let's hope that - as much as any of us can at the minute - Captain Tom enjoys his birthday.
