Truth behind viral claims The Simpsons predicted ‘Coldplay couple’ moment

Andy Byron and Kristin Cabot went viral for all the wrong reasons

The viral CEO and HR head caught out at a Coldplay concert seem to have entranced the world, but there are claims Simpsons fans could see it coming.

Just in case you didn't know, that bloke and the lady he was canoodling with during Coldplay weren't actually husband and wife, it was the (now former) CEO of Astronomer Andy Byron and the company's head of HR Kristin Cabot.

When they appeared on the kiss cam they quickly ducked for cover, leading Chris Martin to joke: "Either they’re having an affair or they’re very shy."

If they wanted to avoid attention it was very much the wrong approach as the moment has gone viral and sometimes it seems as though everyone on the planet has seen it now.

Byron is married to someone else, though perhaps not for much longer, and he also resigned very shortly after shooting to viral fame, and now some folks reckon that The Simpsons predicted the whole thing.

The idea that 'The Simpsons predicted it' has been going around for a long time now as the cartoon has a surprising number of moments where the things that happen in it end up coming true in real life.

However, the claims that The Simpsons somehow managed to get the 'Coldplay couple' almost bang on are very wide of the mark.

While various posts have been circulating on social media which appear to show a still from The Simpsons in which a couple that look remarkably like Byron and Cabot get caught out the image is a fake.

Snopes did some digging and said that they'd run the picture through some software which told them there was a 99.9 percent chance that it was an AI generation.

They pointed out that while there were episodes where Homer and Marge ended up on a kiss cam, there wasn't anything which would at all resemble the current Coldplay-related scandal.

It's all a bunch of bunkum, really.

While there might be elements of this debacle which have appeared in The Simpsons, you really need a more concrete connection than vague imagery to call it a proper prediction.

Just because Principal Skinner and Mrs Krabappel were caught having an affair it doesn't mean The Simpsons predicted something like this, nor does the presence of a kiss cam in an episode.

Former Simpsons showrunner Al Jean once explained that the show's incredible prediction record is just a case of how many episodes they've done.

He said: "If you write 700 episodes, and you don't predict anything, then you're pretty bad. If you throw enough darts, you're going to get some bullseyes."
