Watch the video below for the moment when a young man's new life as a freshly certified driver came to a premature stop - he crashed into a river 10 minutes after passing his test.

In the footage, the young motorist swerves to avoid pedestrians, but there's a minor problem in that that he just so happens to be careering down a narrow bridge.

Now, we might have suggested he simply needs to slam his breaks on, as it looks like there's plenty of space in front of him to stop in time. However, the panicked driver, identified as a Mr. Zhang, opts to test the float-ability of his new motor instead by taking both it and himself for a dip.

Ironically enough, Mr. Zhang was supposedly reading phone messages congratulating him on passing his test as he turned onto the Laoping Bridge in the city of Zunyi, located in the southern Chinese province of Guizhou.

Zhang told local media: "While I was driving, I tried to grab my phone and read some messages while two people were in front of me on the bridge. I became nervous and turned left suddenly."

Thankfully for the possibly soon-to-be unqualified again driver, the car didn't sink straight away, allowing him time to escape and reach safety.

He continued: "Luckily, the car floated for a while. I couldn't open the driver's door so I had to kick open the door on the other side. Otherwise, I may never have got out as my hand was dislocated in the chaos."

Residents helped Zhang get to a safe area before handing him some dry clothes, according to local media, while the police ensured the car was lifted out the river by crane.

It's unknown if Zhang will face charges for his driving although we suspect the inevitable widespread sharing of his clip is going to cause him enough punishment, and make sure that he thinks again before checking his phone while on the road - that is, if he's ever allowed to again.
