He couldn't handle the heat...

A Mexican YouTuber and influencer ended up in hospital after biting off more than he could chew, quite literally.

Comedian and online actor Hugo Lara Arias ended up needing medical attention after scoffing down a pair of habanero chili peppers in a stunt for his YouTube channel.

The whole thing arose because he lost a bet with another of the stars of his popular channel 'Los Hermanos Lara' or - in English - 'The Lara Siblings'.

The group are known for their online antics, including ridiculous stunts. On this occasion, whoever lost the bet had to perform the forfeit of chowing down on the two incredibly spicy peppers at the same time.

As you can see, it didn't go down that well.

Before eating down the habaneros, Lara admitted to his three mates: "I don't eat chili."

Steeling himself for the fight ahead, he added: "But first one, then the other."

His friends then reminded him that the whole point of the forfeit was to eat them at once. None of this 'one after the other' nonsense.

No sooner had the peppers touched his gob, he started choking, coughing, and turning red in the face.

While his pals continued to guffaw and mock him, in the time-honoured YouTuber fashion, it soon became apparent that Lara was in real trouble, and it was no laughing matter.

He grabbed at his throat and wretched, which was about the point that his friends started to worry and called him an ambulance.

Yeah, he's struggling.

In the end, he was OK. After the stunt went badly awry, his sister and co-star Yazmin Lara released a statement in which she confirmed her brother was safe.

She wrote: "Hugo Lara is in stable condition. We didn't think that this would get so out of control, and we will show you the video we recorded... so that you can see what really happened..."

Well, at least they managed to get some YouTube views out of his misery. It'll probably go on to become the biggest video they've ever released.

To be fair to them, they've already managed to bag themselves 658,000 subscribers to date, and that's without nearly killing anyone.

Fair play.
