Wetherspoon is slashing its prices next week for one day only

Pub giant Wetherspoon is slashing its prices by 7.5 per cent for one day next week to mark Tax Equality Day.

Pub giant Wetherspoons is slashing its prices by 7.5 percent next week, giving customers cheaper food and drinks.

However, customers will need to be quick as Spoons says discounts will only take place on Thursday, 15 September.

Wetherspoons have also said that prices may vary across the country, particularly in the bigger UK cities.

So, how much will customers be expecting to save for the pub trip next Thursday?

Well, if you fancy breakfast, a large full-English usually costing £6.30 will cost £5.83 - saving you 47p.

For the main menu, a classic burger and a soft drink will be reduced from £7.45 to £6.90 - a 55p saving.

Meanwhile, in the gourmet section, the Empire State burger with an alcoholic drink will be reduced from £10.90 to £10.08 - a 82p saving.

The price of beer also varies across the country, but a £3 pint would be reduced to £2.77 during the discounted day.

In Scotland, prices will only be reduced on food and non-alcoholic drinks due to licensing restrictions.

The offer also excludes pubs in airports and the Republic of Ireland.

The price drop is happening to highlight Tax Equality Day and the benefits of a permanently reduced tax bill could have for the pub industry.

Currently, pubs and restaurants have to pay 20 percent VAT, which had been reduced to 5 percent during the pandemic.

JD Wetherspoon Chairman Tim Martin has urged the new Chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, to reduce the rate of VAT on pubs to help them fight against big supermarket chains.

Supermarkets don't pay VAT on food, so can potentially pass the savings on to customers by having discounted alcohol - something that the Spoons boss thinks is unfair.

He said: "Customers in our pubs will find the price of their food and drink will be lower than normal on Tax Equality Day.

“The Chancellor should note that the main impact of tax inequality is on high streets and town and city centers, which heavily depend on a diversity of prosperous hospitality businesses for economic, social and employment success."

The one-day price cut is not the only discount coming to the pub chain as we head into autumn.

Many veteran students will be familiar with the Wetherspoons voucher booklet.

Well, it's good news for freshers, as that packed booklet will be making its return, just in time for the start of term.

The pub chain said that the booklets offer 84 vouchers on food and drinks, including deals on breakfast, main meals, pitchers, shots, pints, soft drinks, and more.
