A woman has taken to TikTok in excitement after figuring out what the extra components in a shopping trolley can be used for.

A shopping trolley already has so many purposes. When you were little, it was a free ride you could hitch to be carried around the wonders of the supermarket, secretly grabbing a bag of sweets and plopping them in the trolley when your unsuspecting parent was looking the other way.

Abandoned trolleys which have fled from their supermarket and been left standing on the street are also tempting vehicles on a drunken night out - which ultimately always ends up in someone getting flung over the side and rolled onto the curb.

However - getting back to the true function of a trolley - one mum has taken to social media after realising what the smaller compartments are actually useful for.

TikToker Gemma Bird - a.k.a. Money Mum - uses the platform to share financial tips and other tricks with her followers.

From the latest clothing sales to make-up dupes, in one of her recent videos, the mum has also shared her 'shock' revelation while on a food shop, over what the extra sections in the shopping trolley are meant for.

Gemma discovered the two metal holes which flip onto the small section at the end of the trolley perfectly hold a bunch of flowers and baguette.

The post reads: "I can not get over I didn't no this what they are for."

Gemma Bird shared her realisation with her TikTok followers.

However, while the realisation was a new one for the mum, not all followers were quite as flabbergasted by the explanation as to why there are two holes and a smaller compartment within the trolley.

One user said: "Pretty sure there used to be instructions on the trolley handle to tell you what they were for. Either way, pretty obvious really."

"Yes some of us been doing this for years but I think I'm bit older than u sweet xx," another commented.

However, one joked: "I thought they were for wine."

A fourth wrote: "I've never seen these on trolleys."

And a final claimed: "They are old trolleys."

One user argued the design is only on 'old trolleys'.

Organisation is key, especially when you're at the check-out in Aldi or Lidl, faced with a member of staff who has basically been trained at an Olympic-level of scanning items, firing them out at you before you even have time to open a plastic bag.

So, next time you do your weekly shop, why not grab a baguette, flowers, or a couple of bottles of wine and test out Gemma's hack.
