Trying to find a suitable place to park your car can at times be a nightmare.

But one woman’s parking mishap went from bad to worse after she apparently mistook a lift for a car parking spot in an underground car park.

The 38-year-old driver who hails from the city of Stuttgart, Germany, was plunged a stomach-flipping 35 ft down the lift shaft on Saturday after searching for a place to park her Smart car.

But being that the lift was indeed not somewhere a car should go, the doors burst open at around 10:30 am, sending her on a 10 metre-vertical drop which resulted in her car landing upside down on top of the lift.

After the woman freed herself, she called local firefighters straightaway for assistance.

A spokesperson for Stuttgart Fire Department said of the incident: "The woman was able to climb out of her Smart and make an emergency call with her cell phone."

Two firefighters then abseiled down the lift shaft, strapping the driver to a stretcher as they rescued her.

After she received first aid treatment, other firemen then pulled her up out of the area to safety.

Firemen then blocked up the demolished lift door with wood - hopefully, preventing any more similar parking ordeals - and the lift was swiftly taken out of service.

Specialists were then called to bring the crashed Smart car to the surface.

The woman accidentally rammed down the closed door of the lift.

Daniel Anand, a press and public relations officer for the fire rescue organisation, said in a statement: "After being rescued from the elevator shaft, the person was handed over to the rescue service and taken to a hospital for further treatment."

The woman later told Bild newspaper in Germany of the ordeal: "I have no idea how that could have happened. Physically, I'm fine again."

LADbible has contacted Stuttgart Fire Department for further comment.

Elsewhere in car news, a BMW driver has been rinsed for their ‘shameless’ parking outside of an ASDA store.

While the majority of commentators agree the driver was taking the absolute p**s, others have leapt to their defence.

Well, if that’s not a sign from the universe to only park in designated bays in the future, I don’t know what is.
