Millions of people may be without access to HBO Max ahead of Euphoria’s latest episode due to an update to the streaming service’s app.

HBO Max announced on its support page recently that it would no longer be compatible with the Amazon Fire Stick if the device is running the wrong operating system.

That means that if you’re using an older version of the Fire Stick, you could lose access to shows like The White Lotus, The Pitt, and Game of Thrones just weeks after its release in the UK.

Amazon Fire Stick uses an operating system known as Fire OS, and HBO Max was working perfectly fine on Fire OS 5 or later.

However, the US streaming giant quietly announced that the app would no longer work on Fire Sticks using Fire OS 5.

Amazon does not update the Fire OS across its many devices, which in turn reduces the longevity of its older models. Since Fire OS 5 was launched in 2014 it’s likely an upgrade will be necessary to keep watching your favourite shows.

How do you know if your Fire Stick is affected?

There’s a simple way to check if HBO Max no longer works on your Fire Stick.

Head to your Fire TV’s Settings page and select My Fire TV. From there, click About and choose Fire TV.

On this page, you’ll be able to view which version of Fire OS is running on your Fire Stick and whether there is an update available, if that doesn’t work you’ll need to upgrade to a newer generation Fire Stick.

If you watch HBO Max on your Fire Tablet that could be affected too, so it’s worth checking that too.

The full list of affected devices are:

  • Fire TV (2nd Generation)
  • Fire TV Stick (2nd Generation)
  • Fire TV Stick Basic Edition
  • Fire TV (1st Generation)
  • Fire TV Stick (1st Generation)

HBO Max joins Netflix and Paramount+ as streaming platforms that have all stopped working on older Fire Stick models in recent months.

Earlier this year Fire Stick owners were urged to return older models after Amazon introduced the Fire TV Stick 4K Select last year with faster streaming, powered by the new Vega OS system.

It had a free-trade in system where you could upgrade with a huge discount. That also came as Amazon’s Fire TV Blaster that was first introduced back in 2019 was also discontinued.

The accessory was designed to enable hands-free voice control for your home entertainment system, turning any TV into a smart TV.

However, due to the introduction of other popular Fire TV devices, such as the Fire Stick and Fire TV Cube, it is no longer required.

The device is no longer sold on Amazon and according to The Independent, the gadget 'stopped working' from January 31.
