Samsung absolutely goes in on Apple after unveiling foldable iPhone Duo

This week's iPhone Duo launch has well and truly caused a stir.

At the end of Apple's iPhone 18 announcement, consumers were treated to their first glimpse of the foldable iPhone Duo – set to be released on 23 October at a sky-high price of $1,999 (£1,475).

Quite amusingly, the vultures were circling in real-time on social media as the company proudly presented its dip into the flip phone market.

One of those vultures was rival tech giant Samsung, which is currently in the process of being sued by popstar Dua Lipa.

Samsung Mobile US' social team proceeded to mock the iPhone Duo across five tweets, which the Apple Design channel reposted with the caption: "Samsung is having a mental breakdown right now".

So, what exactly were Samsung ribbing?

"So far, so same #ItsTimeToSwitch," read their grammatically inaccurate opener.

"Making us wait? Fine. We'll be over here, folding 3 ways", "It's feeling very familiar. Is this a Sims sequel..." and "Not the bed side clock. It's giving Groundhog Day," followed over the next 15 minutes.

As for Samsung's final jab, its last response on X finished with a winking emoji after claiming Apple was 'reheating our leftovers', which no doubt alluded to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 phone.

All very childish, yes, but harmless and pretty entertaining when you consider just how gargantuan these firms are.

At the time of writing, Samsung is valued at $1.28 trillion (£945 billion), while Apple massively raises the temperature at $4 trillion (£2.9 trillion).

Meanwhile, out of absolutely nowhere, educational tech company Duolingo got in on the fun too.

Reacting to the iPhone Duo's pricing, Duolingo tweeted: "iPhone Duo: $1,999. Duo on your iPhone: free".

One overriding issue with Apple's first foray into flip mobiles seems to be its size, and apparent specification for right-handed users.

This was another running commentary on socials yesterday (9 September) as fans picked apart what worked about the foldable iPhone and what didn't.

"Regardless of the fact that it can unfold, even if it could unfold 10x, iPhone Duo size before unfolding is already very unusual," wrote X user Mei Shaonu. "It's extremely wide, almost tablet-wide, which is not normal for a smartphone."

Another individual argued: "Just realised that the iPhone Duo isn't going to work for me since the controls are for right handed operation.

"I'm a phone in the left pocket, keys in the right pocket kind of guy. My left hand has learned to operate a smartphone and my right hand does everything else. Even if Apple added an accessibility option to flip the display 180 the ergonomics for Touch ID wouldn't work."
