A couple who bought two Tesla vehicles and then drove around 500 miles per week were left surprised after comparing electrical bills.

Mac’s Tech Toy Box took to YouTube to show the impact having electric cars from Elon Musk’s company had on their finances.

The US-based man said he has the Tesla model Y while his wife drives the Telsa model 3 long range.

Before getting into the differences in bills, before and after both driving these cars and charging them at home, the bloke did point out that filming it during the summer months (back in 2022) means their air conditioning is running ‘a little more frequently’.

So, before getting their two Teslas, he says in the first five months of living ‘at this space’ their bill averaged at $225 (£184).

“That’s of course with some highs and with some lows,” he added, noting how it was the ‘tail end’ of the summer months in Florida.

Then, after he got his Tesla model Y and his wife the model 3 long range, there was quite the shift in their cost.

He pointed out how he was charging his car most nights of the week, a little more often than his partner. But that didn’t seem to matter too much.

“The bill actually went down,” he said. “$214 (£175) down from the $225 that it was prior which is interesting.”

Although, in the summer months of this new period with the aircon on and vehicle charging the ‘bill was $267.32 (£219)’.

“Ok, so that’s quite an increase from the $214 with just me, but only slightly more expensive than that average of $225 from before I got any electric vehicle,” he added.

He went on to look at the roughly $320 (£262) the couple would spend on fuelling up their previous cars each month. So, for him, he’s still saving cash by having the Teslas due to the overall electric bill compared to paying for electricity plus car fuel.

“If you are looking at purchasing a Tesla and you are worried about how much your bill is going to increase, I don’t think that’s something you need to take into account,” he concluded.

Users commented to say the ‘savings is even greater for most’, while some still aren’t sold on the idea of an electric car.

Tesla recently had to recall 240,000 vehicles due to a camera issue that could cause serious accidents. The models recalled were the 2024-2025 Tesla Model 3 and the 2024-2025 Tesla Model 3, while Tesla also wants back the Model X and Model Y from 2023-2025.
