With the majority of new cars sold in the UK having to be electric by 2030, there is a lot of interest in how much they might cost us.

Sure, you might be saving money on petrol or diesel, but it means upping your energy bills to charge them up.

And so, to help make things clear, a couple decided to crunch the numbers in the US and compare just how much it costs them to have their two Teslas.

The pair managed to rack up 500 miles so we could see what kind of impact the electric vehicles (EVs) had on their finances.

Generally, these kinds of cars have a range less than the average petrol car, and young people are gravitating towards the more environmentally conscious options, including hybrids.

From what the YouTuber found, it seems it’s also a financially-conscious choice (once you’ve bought the new car, of course).

Electricity costs before getting Teslas

American content creator Mac’s Tech Toy Box shared that they were filming in the summer months back in 2022, meaning the air conditioning was on more than usual.

He revealed that in the first five months of living in their home without the EVs, their electricity bill averaged out at $225 (£184).

Mac explained that it factors in 'some highs and with some lows', given that they were living in Florida in the latter summer months.

Which Tesla models did they buy?

While his wife got herself a four-door saloon in the Tesla Model 3 Long Range, Mac bagged himself an SUV with the Tesla Model Y.

Due to the size of his vehicle, he admitted that the Model Y was being charged most nights in a week, a lot more than his wife’s.

How did their bill change while using the Teslas?

He revealed: "The bill actually went down - $214 (£175), down from the $225 that it was prior which is interesting."

Mac added that the summer months of this new period, with the air con on and the vehicles charging, had the bill at $267.32 (£219).

“Ok, so that’s quite an increase from the $214 with just me, but only slightly more expensive than that average of $225 from before I got any electric vehicle,” the YouTuber said.

Comparison to petrol cars

He also explained that they'd spend roughly $320 (£262) filling their previous cars up with petrol every month.

So basically, the pair are saving huge amounts of cash with the Teslas, as they were adding just $50 per month onto the bill, a far cry from the amount they used to fork out to keep their cars running.

Mac advised: “If you are looking at purchasing a Tesla and you are worried about how much your bill is going to increase, I don’t think that’s something you need to take into account.”
