Gordon Ramsay had a near death experience that made him think he was a 'goner'.

The Michelin-starred chef was out hunting puffins in Iceland while filming the F Word back in 2008 when he lost his footing, fell off a cliff and ended up plunging into icy water.

To make matters worse, the thick winter clothes Ramsay was wrapped up in started to drag him below the surface.

Despite being a strong swimmer, Ramsay struggled to keep above water while attempting to take off his heavy clothes.

He told The Sun: "I thought I was a goner.

"They say cats have nine lives. I've had 12 already and I don't know how many more I'll have.

"I remember thinking, 'Oh f***.' My boots and my waterproofs were dragging me down.

"I'm an extremely good swimmer, but I couldn't get to the surface. I was panicking and my lungs were filling with water.

"When I got to the top after getting my boots off I was dazed and my head was totally numb."

Although he's well known for his, often brutal, honesty - Ramsay went on to say he'd been reluctant to tell his wife Tana about the near-miss.

He added: "I chickened out but she knew something was up.

"She was upset and extremely p****d off. When I was underwater all I could think of was Tana and my kids.

"It wasn't until I was on the plane home I realised what a close call I'd had."

The couple have five kids - Megan, Matilda, Jack, Holly and Oscar.

Speaking last year, Ramsay joked that his youngest son, who was just one at the time, had already learnt to swear.

In an interview with Bang Showbiz he joked: "He did his first solids, but he spat them out within three seconds.

"It was butternut squash puree.

"And you can sort of lip read, and Tana my wife was cooking.

"And I think the words that came out of his mouth was, 'F***ing disgusting'."

Whether or not he's mastered swearing, the little dude has certainly inherited his dad's trademark scowl.

Facebook

After sharing a snap on Oscar's first birthday in April last year, Ramsay was flooded with comments from fans who loved the similarities between father and son.

One person wrote: "Oh boy, the 2nd Gordon Ramsay. He looks just like you when you are mad at people. Happy Birthday, Oscar."

While another posted: "Happy Birthday Oscar how time flies you are the spitting image of your dad and I love the face your pulling again just like your dad xxx."
