A new trailer for Toy Story 5 has been released and there’s already a theory which suggests all is not as it seems.
The trailer is out and it shows Woody (Tom Hanks) reuniting with the rest of the gang back in what looks like Bonnie’s house for the movie releasing later this year.
You’ll remember at the end of Toy Story 4 it looked like Bonnie didn’t want to play with Woody any more, and when the time came he decided to stay behind with Bo Peep (Annie Potts) looking after other lost toys.
It was a heartfelt goodbye and seemed to be the end of the franchise, though it had come after the previous fitting ending of Toy Story 3 where Andy had outgrown his toys and played with them one last time before donating them to Bonnie.

The trailer indicates that the toys are having to deal with a new threat stealing Bonnie’s attention, the technological terror Lilypad (Greta Lee) which is basically a fancy iPad.

Is that really Woody?
Given that Toy Story 4 seemed like the natural end for Woody’s story there’s a theory going round that the Woody we see in the new trailer isn’t the one we know and love.
We’re not just talking about his new poncho.
Woody seems to be showing signs of his age as he’s developing a ‘bald spot’ on the back of his head where the paint has got thinner, which is something he had fixed back in Toy Story 2 when Al had him repaired.
It’s another sign that Woody, already an old toy in the first Toy Story, is actually getting very far along in years, but the theorists reckon the Woody we see might be a clone.
Or, in less fancy terms, it’s another Woody doll rather than the one we know and love, because he’s basically had two perfect endings already so him coming back doesn’t make that much sense.
The movies have already explored the idea that the toys are not unique, as Buzz (Tim Allen) had to learn he was a toy in the first movie, then encountered an entire aisle of Buzz Lightyears in the sequel and realised much to his annoyance how deluded he’d been.
The trailer seems to indicate he’s going to have to deal with another bunch of Buzzes again in this film.
On the other hand, it was made clear Woody is a very rare and old toy so there’s not many of him around.
Buzz was the shiny new toy every kid wanted, it makes sense there’d be aisles of him in a toy store, but Woody is clearly much rarer.

Toy Story 4 was supposed to be the last one
Toy Story 4 already caused a bit of consternation among fans who thought it was a movie that didn’t need to happen, and then when that had a big emotional goodbye there were plenty who reckoned they should know when to wrap it up and call time in the beloved films.
After all, a big goodbye from Woody doesn’t work so well if he shows up again in the next movie.
According to IGN, Toy Story 4 producer Mark Nielsen said: "We see Toy Story 3 as the end of Woody’s time with Andy, and we really see this as the completion of Woody’s arc and the story of Buzz and Woody."
Fellow producer Jonas Rivera said: "This was the final chapter. And as filmmakers, to be honest, we feel satisfied that this is where you can end it."
If this Woody in the trailer isn’t the real thing and is just pretending to know the other toys then it’d throw a wrench into what we think we know from the trailer.
The trailer does show Jessie (Joan Cusack) calling Woody for help, and he appears to be the one we last saw at the end of Toy Story 4 so what reason would another Woody have to show up or even know to appear?
More likely it really is the Woody we know coming back because he’s the star of a massively successful series of movies and trying to do Toy Story without Woody is a big risk.
Toy Story 5 is set to release in cinemas on 19 June.
