Fans of the hit sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine were left devastated after one of the show's most popular characters made her final departure.

Chelsea Peretti, who plays Gina Linetti, said her last goodbyes to the series yesterday evening, and left viewers in bits - with many taking to Twitter to share their feelings.

One person tweeted: "Definitely, what I will miss most is the partnership between Gina and Holt. How they, in their way, helped and respected. They gave me a lot of fun and I hope they interact again in their upcoming appearances."

Another commented: "As heartbreaking as that was. Gina said her goodbyes in beautiful, funny, very 'Gina' ways which made that episode so so special. we love you @chelseaperetti and we'll support you on your journey like I'm more than sure the precinct will for Gina."

The hashtag #ThankYouChelsea started trending on Twitter as fans used it to reach out to the star and share some of their favourite 'Gina' moments with her.

Chelsea responded to some of the tweets with a screenshot of the trending hashtag and a giving a thank you to the US.

On the TV show's official Twitter account, Gina's final entrance was saluted for how colourful and over the top it was.

Chelsea announced back in early October 2018 that she had plans to leave the show with an emotional and heartfelt message to fans on Twitter.

She wrote: "B99 fans. Hiiiiiiiiiiii. Chelsea Peretti, here. I won't be doing a full season of Brooklyn Nine Nine in Season 6.

"But that doesn't mean I won't ever be back. I want to thank you for the hours you spent watching Gina be Gina: confident, idiotic-but-smart, pithy, and infused with rhythm and cell-phone radiation. It is hard for me to know exactly what to say."

Since the show started back in 2013, Chelsea has starred in 120 episodes as the lovable and feisty Gina.

Despite Gina making her departure from the show - only episodes after her emotional 20-year school reunion with Jake - Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been a rollercoaster of emotions.

First of all the show was dropped by Fox, but was then given a last minute reprieve when it was picked up by NBC, and now the new season has been extended.

So the show must go on. But without a much loved character.
