Josh Brolin looks to be taking his role in the up-coming off-beat superhero flick Deadpool 2 pretty damn seriously as he bulks up an incredible amount to play muscle-bound future warrior Cable.

Brolin has been hitting the gym hard and following a rigorous diet plan while documenting his fitness regime on social media.

The usually slender actor, 49, posted a video to Instagram, showing him in intense workout mode, complete with bulging veins.

"Totally clean: no sugar, no breads, no pastas, no drugs, none of it," Brolin wrote.

"Fish, rice, eggs, veggies, water, one @bulletproof or @cavemancoffeeco in the morning. I'm almost 50."

In January, Brolin shared a before-and-after image of him weighing 73 pounds more than his younger self.

Brolin has also been slipping the hashtag #ryanreynoldsismybitch into a lot of his workout posts, making a friendly jab at his Deadpool 2 co-star.

The Cable character, created by Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld and writer Louise Simonson, is described as being in many ways the opposite of Deadpool. He's a man who is a leader and used to being obeyed, and who is very controlled - but with an aura of simmering violence.

In the comics, Cable was from the future and was the adult son of Scott Summers, also known as the X-Man Cyclops.

Deadpool, released in 2016, gratified fans of the subversive comic book character by packing in the profanity, sex and dark humour.

Cornering the adult end of the superhero move genre, it was a roaring success and gained praise from fans and critics alike.

The sequel, judging by its tongue-in-cheek, Superman-spoofing teaser, is likely to do just the same.

In the trailer, we see Reynolds's character popping into a phone booth to get into costume and pressing his arse against the glass.

But by the time he's managed to change, the man he is aiming to help has already been shot.

Deadpool 2 is set to hit cinemas in 2018.
